You know it makes sense.
How do you make something into a massive problem and/or a profitable enterprise these days? Easy answer: Make it illegal and/or appeal to the stupid - It really is that simple. Let’s look at some examples:
Drugs. : Many years ago drugs were as commonplace as they are today per-capita. Even Shakespeare was at the opium at times - But there was no drug problem; and the equivalent of “smack-heads” who were off their face 24/7 were shunned by society; otherwise drugs were recreational. : Toke on an opium pipe in the local and no wailing sirens and blue lights would appear - And girls did it too; just a bit more privately. All throughout history drug usage has been commonplace but has never been a problem until society made it illegal in the 19th, 20th, and 21st Centuries.
Does that mean that drug usage should be legalised? Not necessarily and not necessarily not: Some people are capable of using drugs recreationally and in a responsible manner: Then there are others far from it; they just like to get as off-their-face as they can get and act like irresponsible imbecilic thugs. This latter class of psychedelic hooligan usually quickly become addicted and turn to crime in order to be able to keep up a regular supply of their drug to feed their habit: Therein lies one of the problems and a reason why the authorities have made drugs illegal - However prevention is better than cure; and simply adding another restriction doesn’t make the problem go away; rather it just causes society to increase the amount of its resources devoted to policing restrictions. How can prevention be accomplished rather than a partially-effective cure? By educating people, from birth, in their social responsibilities in self-discipline, and in developing a responsible attitude: People are not taught any personal responsibility anymore: It’s a fact and it causes no end of problems for society as a whole. We are living in a world made up largely of dysfunctional delinquents who have no idea of personal integrity and responsibility; a lot of them don’t even posses a decent education in the basics of life even - This is a globally-problematic situation and it has to change or at least improve rather than worsening as it is before any positive progress can be made overall.
Sex : ‘Dodgy subject; but there was never any problem with the most natural act known on the planet to virtually all species, until around the Fourth Century AD. At that time the Teutonic Visigoths conquered the natural Pagan Roman Empire. - Yes the Romans were rife with corruption at the time; and Paganism had gone extremely downhill with regard to them. They’d tried Christianity and it had already failed; but the new rulers had yet to learn. Unfortunately due to their conquest, a particular sect of Christianity became firmly entrenched in Rome - The Paulian Sect. The Apostle Paul had during his lifetime been a bigoted chauvinist. Peter; by means of whom Jesus wanted to continue his legacy, had failed to get out there; having neither the Roman connections nor the inherent stamina that Paul had. (Going briefly back to the subject of drugs; there is evidence from many sources that Jesus and his coven were all pot-heads of a sort. Even the anointing oils of the Jewish culture at the time were known to have a fairly strong narcotic effect - However that subject is beyond the scope of this article.) Peter also had the issue of repeatedly getting nicked for intensive preaching against the establishment; but unlike Paul he didn’t have Roman citizenship as a backup and therefore ended up frequently in the slammer which didn’t help one bit. Paul, on the other hand, had made it relatively unscathed to Rome; flashed his Roman Citizen card about a bit, and become accepted by some as a manic preacher pain-in-the-arse; by others as a teacher and leader; and so the Paulian sect of Christianity had gained a foothold in the only place that mattered; Rome. The Visigoths conquered and set themselves up as the new masters of the Empire; checked out the many beliefs of their new peoples as they do, and got to quite like the sound of this Christianity cult which taught peace and love for one another; yet banned any sex outside of marriage, homosexuality, and other less-welcome forms of sex. ‘Small price to pay; what’s more it’ll keep the population down a bit and cost the new government less welfare payments, reduce the hassle of unwanted pregnancy…blah - And so they adopted it; but the church; now legal and the state religion, got big and powerful - too powerful. They elected Popes as Christ’s image on earth…and the pre-conquest corruption set in again; this time with a religious rather than a governmental flavour. In fact the church ended up running and being the government; not just in Rome but in all Central and Western Europe: Eventually nobody could do anything without the permission of the church; not even kings and queens! - And sex was controlled by the Roman Catholic control-freak clergy just like everything else was. Male domination was set in place and encouraged. Queen Victoria made it even worse by allowing the policing of sex even in the working classes and the lowlife. By the 1920s a girl could be totally ostracised from society for falling pregnant outside of marriage; although the church was starting to lose its grip even then. Homosexuality was illegal (At least male homosexuality was: Lesbianism wasn’t recognised as being existent by Victoria; but I’ve seen photos taken before the 20th Century which show it was going on even during her reign; and not just hello girlie kissy-kissy either.): I jest not; one could spend life in prison just for being gay right up until the mid-1950s - And the underground gay industry in Soho was a thriving moneyspinning community nevertheless: Some gay men made massive fortunes from it. Then it was legalised and ceased to be such a moneyspinner. Today there’s nothing unusual about being gay, and apart from the uneducated simpletons and a few powercrazed lunatic-fringe Christians and idiot Neanderthal teenagers nobody bats an eyelid. Similarly with extramarital, premarital, and unmarried sex: Very few people are bigoted and snobby about it anymore; apart from a few uneducated dimwitted hardliners and the extreme-right-wing looney Fundamentalist Christian Movement. (Although it can have a negative effect on the overpopulation problem if the participators aren’t responsible enough to use contraception.) It’s funny how things always revert to their natural state given time.
I suppose I’d better mention the evil side of sex such as prostitutional slavery and pedophilia etc. - These kind of things are not natural; never have been, and never will be - But look how making them illegal and giving them publicity has increased their practice. Should they be made legal then? Would making them legal make them stop? No and no. : Making something legal doesn’t stop it; it just makes it less commercially profitable so less people are able to and interested in making money from it. Making it legal would just take the focus off it and put it onto other illegal activities. There are some things that can’t be legalised though; such as those mentioned already in this paragraph, as well as theft, murder, assault, vandalism, fraud… But the problem still exists inasmuch as if something is illegal there’s a hell of a lot of money to be made from it if a person can do so and get away with it. Fortunately with the crimes immediately above not many people do these days; which is a good thing. BUT the more rules there are in a society the more money there is to be made from breaking them and the more money it costs society to enforce them. Should the Police be spending billions on stopping people taking drugs; thus forcing up the cost of drugs and causing more theft, robbery, muggings and violence in order for addicts to maintain their habit? In my opinion no. It’s true that drugs do lead to crimes when people are out of their head on them sometimes - That’s what the Police should be punishing; not the use of drugs itself. In a similar manner you wouldn’t punish someone for using a hammer to make a blade just because that hammer can be used in a burglary and the blade can be used in a murder would you? No; but if that person then committed a burglary using the hammer and committed a murder using the blade than you would. You don’t lock someone up for using a knife blade as a chef in a kitchen unless they go on to hurt someone with it; so why lock someone up for taking drugs? If they take drugs and commit a crime either as a result or whatever then they get locked away. It was only 60 years ago that a man would be locked up for life for having gay sex. (We girls got away with it though - One default point for women’s liberation!) The police spent a fortune on locking up gay men in the 1950s. What a waste!
It’s typical isn’t it; get onto the subject of sex and the section becomes huge. I should have put another subheading in somewhere but I couldn’t be bothered.
Prevention :Where does one strike a balance with crime? More laws=more crime. Less laws=more people get away with crime: Heads crime wins; tails the authorities lose. Society is doomed? The way it’s going it is. Prevention is better than cure; but to prevent all crime means that everyone should have no chance to commit crime - which means that everyone must be dead or totally incapacitated. -So crime will never be eradicated completely unless humans as a species make themselves extinct. (Which is possible.) In the meantime we should stop, wherever possible, making things illegal unnecessarily which only glamorises them and provides a means for unethical people to make fortunes from it. We no longer ban sex in its many forms; but we lock up those who abuse that freedom and society shuns them: That’s a step in the right direction. Perhaps we should in a like manner re-legalise things that can only be a crime to the perpetrator if that person abuses them, such as drugs - Just like we did in the 1950s with homosexuality. Why should it be a crime for someone to get high if that someone wants to do so? If they get ill as a result of abusing that freedom then they should pay for their treatment. If they commit a crime such as theft while they’re high then they should be locked up. It would encourage personal responsibility and un-burden an overstretched legal system. But for the entire thing to do any good every citizen of planet earth must learn to be a responsible individual rather than an out-of-control semi-zomboid; and that’s where the core of the problem lies: Education of responsibility and societal values. How? That’s a tough nut to crack. perhaps politicians could take this one on rather than finding ways to line their own pockets - After all they were elected by the people to lead and to serve; not to con and to pilfer.
Well all this talk about sex and drugs has made me want to listen to some rock ‘n roll; so I’ll end here. What do you think? Feel free to comment.
