How Do I Tell Whether or Not My Machine is 64-Bit-Capable?

*The author's details are shown below the article.

You’ve finally decided to upgrade your operating system, and, like any good Windows user, you’ve purchased Windows 7. – Or maybe you chose to download a 64-bit Linux distro, burn the iso to disk, and install 64-bit Linux? Either way you’re pretty-much ready to start the upgrade: Bye bye XP… But there’s just one question: Will your existing hardware support a 64-bit operating system?

In the past, in another article, I’ve advised readers to check their processor and motherboard. If the processor and the motherboard both support a 64-bit operating-system then everything is good to go. – But doing that can be time-consuming and labourious: Wouldn’t it be so much easier if there were software that could check it out for you?

The good news is that such a program exists. It is called SecurAble, and you can download it here. It’s freeware, so it won’t cost anything.

It’s a clean program that doesn’t even require installation, as it makes no entries in the system’s registry. – Therefore you can run it straight from the installation-file just the once if you so desire, and then delete it without it leaving any orphaned .dll files behind which are registered in the registry, and serve no other purpose than to waste disk-space.

SecurAble probes the system’s processor to determine the presence, absence and operational status of three modern processor features:

  • 64-bit instruction extensions,
  • Hardware support for detecting and preventing
the execution of code in program data areas, … and
  • Hardware support for system resource “virtualization.”

You’ll notice that determining whether your hardware is 64-bit-capable is only one of its functions. For the purpose of this article we only want to use one of those. – But, having said that, do read the text on the linked page, as there is much more to know about it than I’m going to write in this article. – I don’t want to steal Steve Gibson’s thunder, as it were.

For the purpose of this article, then, that’s about all there is to say. I hope that you found it useful.
