Everybody’s Using Linux… (Your Comments Required)

*The author's details are shown below the article.

OK I lied. :) – Most people use Windows, but a lot of people are using Linux. Take a look at this: -

Operating system used to view my blog

That’s people visiting my blog (Since November 2010) and what operating system they’re using. Here’s the figures again – larger-size this time: -

osfigures100311

Now the real picture: We total up : -

XP + 7 + 2K + Vista + Server 2003 + NT4

29707 + 8524 + 4838 + 2857 + 1934 + 965 = 56763 Windows users

“Linux” + Ubuntu + Suse

7938 + 5293 + 873………………………………. = 14104 Linux users

That’s just under 1 Linux user for every 4 Windows users! – Impressive!

I thought Apple were supposed to be leading the market?

                                                                                         4992 Mac users

There are nearly 3 Linux users for every Mac user

Since there are 4 Windows users for every Linux user, there are 12 Windows users for every Mac user. ‘ Looks like Apple had better get their marketing campaigns into a higher gear!

… But hasn’t Apple recently enjoyed a hot-spell, selling their superb-quality yet incredibly high-priced PCs under the handle “Mac” to professional bloggers, mega-geeks, internet marketers, and other entrepreneurs?

Apparently so, but the fact is that either successful entrepreneurs don’t read this blog enough, or there aren’t enough people who are successful enough to be able to afford the massive price-tag associated with a Mac.

Let’s look at this from a financial perspective: -

Linux is free. ‘Runs on secondhand and new personal computers. ‘Should be the most used operating system if it were as well-marketed and as user-friendly as Windows.

Windows is rather expensive. ‘ Runs mainly on new-ish computers, a few old ones too. ‘Should, by rights, come second to Linux in usage from an economical financial perspective

Mac OSX runs only on Apple’s extortionately-priced computers. Financially-speaking it should be the least-used operating system, and it is.

Can we say, then, that Apple are too expensive to realistically compete for the mainstream? Possibly so, but as we note in the case of Linux, low-cost/free doesn’t automatically mean instant-market-dominance.

What do you think? Maybe you’d like to give your ideas and opinions in the form of a comment?
